Battery capacity is the most quoted and least understood number in portable espresso. A machine advertises 13,500mAh, another advertises 2,500mAh, and the obvious conclusion is that one lasts five times longer.
The reality is more interesting, and it comes down to a single question: are you asking the battery to heat the water, or not?
Heating is almost the entire power budget
Pumping water through coffee takes very little energy. A small pump running for 30 seconds is a rounding error against a battery of any reasonable size.
Raising the temperature of water is an entirely different order of magnitude. Taking 50ml of room-temperature water to brewing temperature means adding a large amount of thermal energy in a short time — and that is where essentially all of a portable espresso maker's power goes.
This produces a counter-intuitive result that almost no spec sheet explains:
The same machine, on the same battery, can produce either a handful of shots or hundreds — depending entirely on whether you pour in cold water or hot.
Cera+ publishes both figures for the Ceramax for exactly this reason: up to 500 extractions using pre-heated water, or 7–8 extractions heating cold water from scratch, on a single charge of its 13,500mAh battery.
Those are not contradictory claims. They are the two ends of the same spectrum, and which one applies to you depends on how you travel.
Which number is yours?
You are the "hot water" user if…
You have access to a kettle, a hotel water heater, a thermos, an office hot tap, or a camp stove. In this mode the battery only runs the pump, and battery capacity effectively stops being a constraint. You will run out of coffee long before you run out of charge.
You are the "cold water" user if…
You are genuinely off-grid — hiking, camping, in a car, on a plane, anywhere with no heat source. Here the battery does all the thermal work, and capacity is the binding constraint. This is the number that matters to you.
Most people are the first type more often than they expect. Be honest about which one you actually are before paying for capacity you will not use.
Why capacity is not the whole story
Two more specs deserve as much attention as mAh:
Recharge time
A large battery that takes four hours to refill can be less useful than a smaller one that refills quickly, especially on multi-day trips where you charge opportunistically. The Ceramax recharges in roughly 2–2.5 hours.
Heat-up time
Every second the heating element runs is battery spent, so heat-up time and battery life are the same problem viewed from two angles. Faster heating means less energy per cup and less waiting.
Cold weather changes the maths
This is the practical detail that catches people out on exactly the trips where they most want coffee.
Two things work against you in the cold. First, lithium batteries temporarily deliver less usable capacity at low temperatures. Second, your water starts colder, so more energy is needed to reach brewing temperature. Both effects push in the same direction.
Plan for meaningfully fewer cold-water shots on a freezing morning than the room-temperature rating suggests. Keeping the machine inside your jacket or sleeping bag overnight genuinely helps.
Five ways to get more shots per charge
- Carry hot water in a thermos. This single habit moves you from the 7–8 shot regime to the effectively-unlimited one. It is by far the highest-leverage change.
- Do not overfill. Heating 80ml costs meaningfully more than heating 50ml. Use the volume you actually intend to drink.
- Use a lower temperature when the beans allow it. 84°C costs less energy than 96°C. For dark roasts you often want the lower setting anyway.
- Keep it warm. A machine starting at 5°C spends energy just getting itself to room temperature.
- Brew consecutively. Back-to-back shots benefit from residual heat in the element; shots spread across a day each start cold.
How to compare two machines honestly
When you see competing battery claims, ask three questions:
- Cold or hot water? A large "cups per charge" figure almost always assumes pre-heated water. Compare like with like.
- What water volume? Cups-per-charge at 50ml is not comparable to cups-per-charge at 80ml.
- What starting temperature? Ratings are typically quoted from room temperature, around 25°C.
Any brand quoting a single unqualified "cups per charge" number is not giving you enough information to compare anything.
The short version
mAh does not tell you how many coffees you get. Water temperature does. If you can bring hot water, battery capacity is nearly irrelevant and you should optimise for size and weight. If you are truly off-grid, capacity is the spec that decides whether you get one coffee or seven — and it is worth paying for.
